instructions
Arrange squares in a 4 x 5 grid and sew together (good sides together) using a 1/4 inch (2/3 cm) seam allowance on each side, pressing seams open as you go.
Fold the two short ends of the ruffle in slightly (wrong sides together) and sew down.
Fold ruffle strip in half lengthwise (wrong sides together) and press to crease.
Gather the raw edge of the ruffle until it measures 66 inches (168 cm).
Pin the raw edge of the ruffle to the raw edge of the patchwork piece, pinning around the entire piece, ruffle fold facing inwards towards the center, and ends overlapping.
Place the backing piece good side down on top of the ruffles and add pins to hold everything in place. Ruffles should be sandwiched between the patchwork and backing pieces, good sides together.
Sew around the edge of the placemat, leaving a 2.5 inch (6.5 cm) hole on one edge.
Pull the placemat right side out through the hole.
Press the placemat in place, folding the edges of the hole inside with the ruffle sandwiched between them.
Top stitch around the entire placemat.
